MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April, 2011
Please find below information on the many events that Cheeky Monkey, Sarnia’s downtown music retail store, will be hosting during April and May. We are pleased to be able to provide our unique setting for the musicians and artists.
We very much appreciate your continued support in helping to promote these events in your publication. If any further information is required please contact us at 519-332-0978 or email cheekymonkey@kent.net
Also, we would be happy to set up interviews with the artists or musicians if you would like. With sincere gratitude, Roland and Mary Anne Peloza c/o Cheeky Monkey 130 Christina St. N Sarnia, ON MUSIC TO FILL THE SPRING AIR The next few weeks at Cheeky Monkey, the downtown music retail store will be hectic ones. Fresh off of celebrating the international event of Record Store Day, they have planned several other days of live entertainment for their customers enjoyment during business hours as part of their Sounds Of Sarnia series and their First Friday events. Sounds Of Sarnia live in-store series is meant as a showcase for the wealth of musical talent found in the Sarnia-Lambton area in a non bar/pub setting. Since the musicians perform in a retail store during the day, it is a family friendly environment. From grandparents to small children are welcome to come in to hear mostly original music performed. The first musician on Saturday April 30 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm is Leigh Coltman. His Folk/Rock self-penned songs are played with an acoustic guitar mixed with some harmonica. As lead singer and songwriter of the Bluegrass/folk band Crow Jane, Leigh brings a comfortable ease to his very personal music. Two weeks later on Saturday May 14, Annette Dillon will be performing from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Annette is a singer/songwriter that enjoys performing from her hugely varied play list of both original and cover songs. She is a true “crowd pleaser” because of her intuitive ability to suit the song to the audience. She welcomes all other singers and musicians to join her on the Cheeky Monkey stage. In between these two dates is the May 6 First Friday. To herald the arrival of May flowers, Cheeky Monkey, will be featuring three very talent female artists. Kesenia Parent is a 17 year old singer/songwriter, hailing from Courtright, ON. She’s a talented guitar, piano, and ukulele player that enjoys singing more than anything else in the world. Kesenia has immersed herself in her music, using it as an outlet for her creativity, as well as a stress reliever. She began writing her own original work when she was fourteen-years-old and hasn't stopped since. In the last year, Kesenia has recorded and released an album, produced and mixed by Dave Allan, owner of Sugar Tone Productions. She is returning for an extra year at L.C.C.V.I. to further prepare herself to follow her musical dreams which include hopefully attending McGill University in Montréal, Québec. Kesenia's musical influences include Lights, Dallas Green, Christina Perri, and most of all Adam Young. The muses for her songwriting are her family and close knit group of friends. Kesenia will be performing from 7:00 to 9:00 pm ‘All The World is A Stage’ is an Art Exhibit and Sale of original work by local artist Karen Benusik. This exhibit and sale of collectively independent subject matters done in brilliant oils and soft acrylics is painted with a passion that captures the imagination which is then transferred to the canvas. Karen was born and raised in Sarnia, attending Lambton College Art Fundamentals course after graduating from St. Clair Secondary School. While in high school she managed to sneak in 6 classes of art in her 4 years of attendance. Her creative ideas stem from when she was very young and realized she could draw pictures from story books just as well as the illustrators themselves. Still searching for her niche, Karen combines many styles creating a unique and interesting body of work. Karen is married with 2 grown sons and currently resides in Petrolia with her husband and their 2 dogs. Her artwork will remain on display and for sale at Cheeky Monkey until Saturday May 28 The third artists is Wendy Starr who will be displaying and selling her beadwork costume jewelry from her PEACE OF THE STARR collection. Each piece is distinctly individual, and each bares her trademark peace symbol medallion. Wendy and her jewelry will be at Cheeky Monkey during this First Friday evening only. For those who are downtown and near the corner of Christina and Cromwell for the May 6th First Friday, you will be in for a big surprise shortly after 6:30 pm. It a “secret” happening, so you will just have to be there to witness it for yourself. At the end of May on the 27th, an exclusive ticketed event is being planned inside Cheeky Monkey. Local songstress Emm Gryner along with Dayna Manning will be doing a concert. Only a limit number of tickets will be sold which will go on sale very soon. For more details you can contact Roland or Mary Anne at Cheeky Monkey by calling 519-332-0978, emailing to <mailto:cheekymonkey@kent.net> cheekymonkey@kent.net or stopping into the store located at 130 Christina St. N, Sarnia on the corner of Cromwell St in the heart of the Downtown Cultural District. MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 31, 2011 But Father, the Emperor has No Clothes! The mighty Emperor of a country not unlike China, cares for nothing but his beautiful clothes in this delightful re-telling of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES at Victoria Playhouse Petrolia for eight school matinees April 18th through 21st, and April 26th and 27th for the general public. Presented by the Victoria Playhouse Young Company, a performance training program for young people between the ages of twelve and eighteen years of age, THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES is a lively, comic tale full of colourful characters, silly situations, and stunning visual designs. One day, Zan and Zar, two playful scoundrels on the look-out for a new adventure, find themselves in the Street of the Royal Weavers, where they hear that the mighty Han, Minister of the Emperor's Robes, is planning to cheat the weavers once again. The Emperor of the land demands a new suit of clothing every hour of the day, and Han has been stealing from the weavers who provide the beautiful silks for the Emperor's wardrobe. When the Emperor visits the Street of the Royal Weavers, Zan and Zar convince him that they can weave a magic cloth to make a glorious suit of royal robes which will be invisible to anyone who is stupid, or unfit for the position he holds. The foolish Emperor installs the two in rooms at the royal palace anxiously awaiting the creation of his new clothes, and when Zan and Zar finish "weaving" the wonderful cloth, the fun really begins! "THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES is one of my favourite fairy tales," says Director, NANCY KEYS. "It's a delightful story that makes fun of pride and vanity, position and authority, and reminds us, in a comic way, never to be afraid to speak the truth." THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES stars the 2011 Victoria Playhouse Young Company: KOREY BROAD, COLTON BROWN, AVERY BRZOBOHATY, LILY CARDIFF, SARA CECILE, KRISTEN DAWSON, MEGAN DOUGLAS, JOEY HAWKINS, ELISA HOLLINGSWORTH, BRIANNE LITT, BECCA MARSHALL, KAITLIN MCDONALD, MEAGHAN PEARSON, KYLE PHIBBS, WILLIAM PLUNKETT, HOLLY REDICK, SABRINA REDICK, KERRIE SHENDE, JULIA SOETEMANS, KELLY WILKS and HOLLY WILSON. "We have a wonderful cast for THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES," states KEYS. "They have been working really hard rehearsing the show for the last two months, and as we get closer to performance, everyone one is getting very excited. We've got a lot of energy and talent with this cast, and we're really proud of them." The Creative Team for THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES includes: Director, NANCY KEYS; Set and Costume Designer, TRACY PHIBBS; Technical Director/Lighting Designer, DAN NAGLE; Stage Manager, KEELY WELSH, Assistant Stage Manager, JONAM CAMPBELL; and Master Carpenter, PAUL JAMIESON. "Once again, our design team has out-done themselves," says KEYS. "The show is visually stunning with gorgeous costumes, beautiful set pieces, and wonderful lighting. I can't say enough how lucky we are to have such talented people working on the show." Tickets for THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES are on sale now, and available at the VPP Box Office, by calling 1-800-717-7694, (519) 882-1221, or on-line at <http://www.thevpp.ca/> www.thevpp.ca. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday October 1, 2008 Who is Canadian musician Royal Wood? Haven't heard of him you say. You may not know the name, but you may know his music. It has been featured on several TV and movie soundtracks; including the HBO series Regenisis, the CBC series This is Wonderland, the film The End of Silence starring Sarah Harmer, and on the soundtrack to the Food Network's The Surreal Gourmet (with other artists including Feist, Tom Waits, The Flaming Lips, Moby, Aretha Franklin) and more. As well, Royal has performed at major events like Hillside Music Festival, Mariposa Folk Festival, Canadian Music Week, North by Northeast, Halifax Pop Explosion, Bluebird North and more; as well as sharing the stage with the likes of Sarah Harmer, My Morning Jacket, Sarah Slean, Peter Elkas, Danny Michel, Serena Ryder, Jill and Matt Barber and most recently with Emm Gryner. With an EP and 2 CD's under his belt his style has been described as ".drifting from sad pastoral laments to capering piano pop jubilance. Vocally and lyrically, Wood comes surprisingly close to Aimee Mann's stomping grounds, with glancing blows at Ron Sexsmith's tenebrous pipes and brand of song craft. But Wood is his own man, his own voice, and the sincerity of his words can't be blamed on anyone but him." NOW Magazine. "Wood is on his way to establishing himself alongside the Canadian royalty of artists such as Sexsmith and Wainwright. " - EXCLAIM MAGAZINE Why is all this good to know?
