St. Pat's Production of Footloose

March/2004
I saw the St. Pat's Musical Production
of Footloose at the Imperial Theatre this week. The stage production is based
around the movie Footloose. The story is about a young teenager and his mother
that move from the big
city of Chicago to a small town some miles away called Beaumont. The young boy
is living with his aunt and uncle and has to get used to the ways of a small
town. One of the biggest changes is that there are a lot of rules such as curfews, church attendance, and partying, and the biggest he
has to get used to is that there is no dancing allowed in the city. It is
actually against the law. I have learned since the movie came out some years
ago that there actually are or were this type laws in some small US towns.
The St. Pats group did a very good job of opening the show with entire chorus
singing the the lead song with a full stage. The students that played the lead
roles all seemed to be about to express themselves. The scene sets used were
very good as well. I always like when a show has a nice set for a scene, at the
end of a scene moves to the front of the stage so the curtain can close behind
them. This allows the next scene to go on, while behind the curtain the stage is
being reset without the audience seeing people moving props or can distract the
actors.
Everything seemed to go well for the group, the only suggestion I would have
made to them was at the end of the show during there finale. They didn't give
the audience enough time to realize the show was over, because the actors came
out taking there bows before the finale was over, and the audience seemed to
still be clapping for the song and I don't think they got the response they
deserved. The theatre was about must have been about 300 - 400 people there. The
young leads got a good response from the students at the front of stage for the
end of the show.
I wish I had a drama club like that at
the Northern when I went there, (I know they do now), and I hope I will be about
to see some more of the Pat's group in the future.
All the best for the group in the future,
